Filthy Chaudi fish market draws public protest

CANACONA

The Congress in Canacona staged a protest alleging that the Chaudi municipal fish market has become filthy and unhygienic, posing health risks to vendors and consumers. Protesters gheraoed the Canacona Municipal Council Chief Officer, demanding a timeline for restoring the market and providing basic facilities for fisherwomen and fish vendors.

They highlighted foul odour, accumulated waste, poor sanitation, inadequate drainage and deteriorating infrastructure, alleging that repeated complaints have gone unaddressed. Protesters said the fishing community, despite playing a key role in food security and the local economy, continues to face neglect.

They demanded a clean, odour-free fish market equipped with proper toilets, waste management, drainage and regular maintenance. Organised under the “Progressive Canacona” campaign, the protest was attended by Janardhan S Bhandari, former Loliem sarpanch Shailesh Pagi and former Khotigao sarpanch Umesh (Daya) Gaonkar.
