Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Friday inaugurated a Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) at Zuari Nagar in Cortalim constituency.
The STP, constructed by NTS Phytorid Technology through the Sewerage & Infrastructural Development Corporation of Goa Ltd (SIDCGL), was inaugurated in the presence of PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar, Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha, Sancoale Sarpanch Girish Pillai, SIDGL vice-chairman Sanjiv Desai and others.
The STP at Dhavlikar Bhaat, Zuarinagar, will clean sewage water from the nullahs, which are flowing to lower Sancoale.
"We still have to learn a lot from nature and how we can make the most benefit from nature to human society. The Hyacinth plant that we have termed as nuisance has been put to a great use and later the waste can be used for fertilizer by Hyacinth plant," said Parrikar.
"This purified water will be pumped from here for other agriculture needs to the farms around and this is the second plan we have for this project," he said.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Saldanha thanked Sadanand Dhavlikar for providing land to the project and explained the working of the STP and how nature and plants would help clean the dirty waters of the nullah.
"A lot of Sancoale villagers had earlier complained of dirty water from the Nullahs entering their fields in Sancoale and causing boils on the feet of farmers." "Now, the government plans to cover all the open Nullahs in Zuarinagar area and this STP will prevent dirty water from the nullahs affecting the fields in Sancoale," she added.
PWD Minister Dhavalikar said he had taken up the initiative about two years ago after noticing the water flow through open Nullahs when he was in the constituency to inaugurate community toilets in Zuarinagar area along with MLA Saldanha. "Where there is a will, there is a way, and this government will do what it promises. About two years back, I had promised the people that this area will have STP within two years," said Dhavalikar.
Rehabilitation of all Zuari Nagar slums by Dec: Parrikar
VASCO: Assuring to transform the Zuari Nagar area, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said the government plans to rehabilitate all slums in Zuari Nagar by December end.
He was speaking after inaugurating the STP at Zuari Nagar on Friday. "Zuarinagar will soon see a big transformation and by December end, we plan to rehabilitate all the slums of Zuarinagar through the Rehabilitation Board, whose chairman is Alina Saldanha." "Residents should stay away from rumours that may be spread on social media during the rehabilitation as the government plans to provide neat and clean houses to all with proper sanitation facilities and clean surrounding," said Parikar.
"A meeting will be convened and a plan will be made, project will be shown and after taking into confidence all the residents, the government will go ahead with the rehabilitation. I am sure after rehabilitation, people will not be able to identify the old Zuarinagar that is there today in the next 10 years," added Parrikar.
"A poor person can also live in a nice house with good facilities and the government will provide all support. Sarpanch Girish Pillai has extended a lot of support and is a man who has all knowledge and contacts with the residents of Zuari Nagar area. I expect his support of talking to residents and explaining to them the benefits of development in the future when government takes up Zuarinagar for development."
"There is no better place than Zuarinagar to realise the PM Modi's dream that all people should have their own house by 2022 and also implement Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan at the same time," Parrikar added.
Cortalim MLA is ‘Shri A Matanhy Saldanha' on STP cornerstone
VASCO: A goof up in the engraving of the cornerstone at the STP project at Zuarinagar has turned Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha into a male, referring to her as "Shri A Matanhy Saldanha.
While the names of Chief Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar and PWD and Transport Minister Ramkrishna M Dhavalikar were correctly mentioned on the cornerstone, it was the engraving of Cortalim MLA as "Shri A Matanhy Saldanha" that amused those who spotted the error.
Besides, the engraving of the Cortalim MLA's name as "A. Matanhy Saldanha" also raised some eyebrows, specially since she is better known by her first name.
While Alina Saldanha did not respond to calls to comment about the error, her Personal Secretary Cliff Vaz expressed surprise that she had been referred to in the masculine form of address "Shri" in the cornerstone and assured to have it rectified.
Responding to her name as "A. Matanhy Saldanha", Vaz said: "Madam uses the format "A. Matanhy Saldanha" everywhere since the last few years."
