Even as the PWD has begun the long pending hotmixing of the key major district road (MDR) in Mapusa “ from Tar bridge upto taxi stand “ on Tuesday at an estimated cost of Rs 1.12 crore, for the moment only part of the road from Tar bridge upto Comunidade Ghor (Vodafone gallery) will be hotmixed.
The hotmixing of the road from Comunidade Ghor up to the taxi stand will have to wait as the local MLA Joshua D’Souza has proposed milling of the road along the stretch.
A separate estimate has been floated for milling of the road which is yet to be tendered.
The hotmixing of 1.2 km road from Tar Bridge to taxi-stand was tendered in 2019 but it was kept pending due to the work of underground cabling.
“People have suffered a lot because of the bad condition of the road. But today we are starting the much delayed work on the road up to the taxi stand. From comunidade ghor we will do the milling of the road to maintain the original height of the road and also to ensure good quality work,” D’Souza said.
“We are expecting the work to be completed in the next three or four days,” he added.
The Mapusa MLA was speaking to the media after inaugurating the road work in the presence of Chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council, Priya Mishal, councillors and PWD officials.
The condition of the key road had deteriorated over a period of time and travelling on the stretch had become a herculean task for motorists particularly the two-wheeler riders.
Several locals and even people from Aldona and villages en route who regularly use the road criticised the authorities for failing to repair the road.
Umpteen videos of the pitiable condition of the road were also circulated on social media.
“It’s like a dream come true. This road was in a horrible condition and all of us were longing to see the road repaired. There were a lot of complaints over the bad condition of the road. Media had also highlighted the poor condition of the stretch. Thanks to our MLA the work has finally begun,” said local councillor, Prakash Bhivshet.
