Finally, the Margao Municipal Council will execute works to check the flow of leachate at Sonsodo and make the approach motorable with the Council-appointed contractor all set to commence work at the site immediately.
In fact, the MMC has appointed a contractor to execute works amounting to Rs 27 lakh to build a leachate tank and channelise the leachate generated inside the Sonsodo waste management shed. The work would also include soling of the approach road to the Sonsodo waste treatment plant, which has turned unmotorable posing risk to the drivers manning the garbage trucks.
Officials further said the contractor will carry out repairs to the Sonsodo waste management shed wall which had twice collapsed due to the piled up garbage inside the shed.
Margao Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar had a review meeting at Sonsodo with senior civic officials, including Chief Officer Manuel Barretto, Municipal engineers and sanitation officials how to bring about a turnaround at the site.
The chairperson later told the media that he has decided to take over the responsibility of putting the Sonsodo site in order. In fact, Shirodkar informed that he would be visiting the Sosnodo site every day for at least two hours to take a review.
“The MMC will take up the work of handling the leachate and repair the approach road which has been posing danger to the garbage truck drivers. We will try and complete the works at the earliest,” he said.
Shirodkar further said that effort will be made to transport the RDF and inert from Sonsodo site before the onset of monsoons. “I have decided to spend two hours at Sonsodo every day. I will take a review of the situation every day from Sonsodo and will give timeline for the workers to comply with,” he said.
Saying that the workers deployed at Sonsodo for the baling work are doing a commendable work, the MMC chairperson said he has requested MMC Sanitation Inspector Viraj Arabekar to lend his helping hand and expertise to tide over the situation at Sonsodo.
