MARGAO: Where there’s a will, there’s a way, so goes the saying. Patrollingof the Margao Municipal garden footpath by team comprising of Margao policeconstable and home guard, have now become a norm rather than an exception.
No beggar, make-believe beggars ormiscreants are allowed to sit, sleep or drink on the Margao Municipal garden benches.Post the murder of a young city jeweler, Swapnil Walke, the MMC garden footpathhas become a permanent patrolling point of the Margao police, just to keep themake believe beggars and miscreants at bay.
No longer does one come across anyonetaking a nap on the garden benches, especially during the day time. For, apolice constable and a Home guard personnel has been permanently posted at thegarden and the adjoining Communidade building to ensure that no miscreants,either in an inebriated state or otherwise, are allowed to sleep on the benchesor on the footpath.
For some time now, more so after thedeath of a couple of beggars, who later tested positive for coronavirus, therehad been a clamour to house the beggars and the homeless in a government shelter home in the interest of thecitizens.
While the authorities only dilly-dalliedon the requests and demands made by the citizens, including local MLA DigambarKamat, the cold blooded murder of the young city jeweler exactly a month ago,finally forced the men in uniform to act and put in place the new securityarrangements in the commercial capital.
