Fish-eatingGoans managed to lay their hands on their staple food on Sunday,either from the coastal belt or unauthorized places, even as thejetties and markets remained shut.
Allegationsalso surfaced at the Cutbona jetty that while the men-in-uniformtried to stop some boat owners from unloading fish at the jetty byciting per the ban order issued by the Fisheries Director, somepeople unloaded tonnes of fish on the other side of the river Sal.
Tonnesof fish comprising kingfish, mackerels, squids and other varietieswere sold at Nuvem by local MLA Wilfred D’Sa. The MLA claimed thatthe fish was brought by boat owners and not from cold storages.
AtBenaulim, hundreds of people thronged the village at many places tolay their hands on fresh sea fish. Sole fish, crabs, mackerels wereon sale at makeshift markets across the village.
Fish,including shrimps, was sold at places such as Navelim, Assolna andnot to mention the sale at most of the junctions and corners takingadvantage of the closure of markets.
Meanwhile,the police continued to patrol the Cutbona fishing jetty to ensurethat the ban imposed by the Fisheries Director was implemented. Therewere, however, allegations that while the police tried to implementthe ban at the Cutbona fishing jetty, fishing vessels unloaded fishelsewhere along the river Sal.
