Fr Michael Fernandes, legal advisor to the Vasco fish vendors, has clarified that the vendors had not moved out from the existing fish market premises because of high court directives and the failed assurances made to the vendors.
"The issue of the new Vasco fish market has not been settled as yet and we have raised our points,” said Fr Fernandes, while speaking to reporters at Mormugao Municipal Council in the presence of Vasco fish market vendors after meeting the MMC administrator Gurudas Pilankar.
“There is a High Court order stating that no activity can be carried out on the footpath. We have been informed that vendors were to be shifted in a shed on the footpath outside the fish market and MMC would approach the High Court to modify the order and take temporary permission to build a shed.”
“We have not got any news on the move and the shed is on hold as of now," said Fr Fernandes.
"The fish market project cannot take off till our assurances are met. In the first place, Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida had given us an assurance in front of all authorities during a joint meeting that works will start only after fish sales by people outside the fish market at different locations is stopped completely.”
“The assurance has failed and it is 100% sure we will not allow the fish market till this primary assurance is met," said Fr Fernandes.
