Fish vendors return to old fish market in Sanguem

A day after being shifted to the new premises by the Sanguem Municipal Council (SMC), the fish vendors returned to their old place to do their daily business as they could not get any business at the new place.

The fish vendors claimed that even after sitting at the new place till late Tuesday evening, they could not sell more than 50 mackerels thereby putting them into huge losses.

The building which housed the fish vendors had become old and in need of urgent demolition. At its meeting earlier this month, the SMC had resolved to demolish the old structure and as a temporary measure, shift all business establishments, including fish and meat vendors, to an alternate place.

Accordingly, the fish vendors were shifted to a new place in the adjacent building owned by the SMS. However, after a day of being shifted, the fish vendors returned to their old place as the new place is located in the interior, which is hardly visited by any person.

The fish vendors also claimed that while they have been shifted to the interior, some fish vendors were reportedly selling fish by the roadside, which severely affected their business.

The fish vendors informed that they are ready to shift to the new place provided the SMC stops the roadside selling of fish and also gets them accommodated at the new place along with them.
