The Directorate of Education (DoE) on Monday issued an order to all schools and higher secondaries in Goa making it compulsory for them to conduct physical fitness activities for the students daily.
The Director of Education Vandana Rao IAS, instructed schools to do so in keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Fit India Movement” launched on August 29 last year which aims at bringing behavioral changes and making children physically active as a way of life, instead of continuing in the sedentary lifestyles they have settled into.
“Physical activity must be made a part of daily routine for all classes in schools to boost fitness,” said Rao in the circular. “It is therefore enjoined upon all heads of government/ government aided /unaided primary / secondary / higher secondary and special schools to hold daily fitness activities for students for holistic development of children and make Fit India Movement a successful peoples’ movement.
She has also shared a link where institutions can share what action they have taken, along with instructions on how to upload photographs, videos on the link.
While the concept of making these fitness routines compulsory for children seems a great idea in theory, it is to be seen how schools carry this out practically.
It will be remembered that as recently as October 2, 2019, when the DoE had made it compulsory for institutes to make their students “plog” in keeping with the Fit India Movement, most schools had found a way around the circular, finding the instructions tedious.
