Five monkeys were found dead in four separate incidents at Shigao-Collem and in Pernem taluka on Tuesday.
Two monkeys were found dead at Torsem, while one each in Morjim, Arambol and Shigao.
According to Pernem forest officer Vilas Gawas, one monkey each was found dead at Morjim and Arambol, while two monkeys were found dead at Torsem.
"Dr Thomas Edison examined the dead monkeys and it was revealed that two monkeys were electrocuted in Torsem. It is suspected that the two monkeys that were found dead in Morjim and Arambol died due to monkey fever," informed Gawas.
After learning about the incident, the forest officials and doctors rushed to the sites and conducted panchanama and later cremated the dead monkeys. Speaking to reporters, Dr Edison said he has sent the samples of two monkeys, which were found dead in Morjim and Arambol, to a lab in Hyderabad. "Reports are expected within 15 days and the reason behind the death of the monkeys will be known," he added.
It may be recalled that some months ago, many monkeys were found dead in Patradevi and Chandel in Pernem taluka. Some people died in Banda, which is on the Goa-Maharashtra border. Goa government had carried out a vaccination drive in Patradevi and Chandel areas.
In Shigao-Collem, a decomposed body of a monkey was found behind government high school, creating panic of Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) or Monkey fever among the residents.
The villagers informed some parents saw the monkey when they had gone to drop their children to school. The locals soon contacted the forest officials.
