Focus on preventive measures to keep crime at bay: DIG

DIG Varsha Sharma, IPS, took stock of the crime situation and reviewed police initiatives against narcotics at the South Goa district police headquarters on Wednesday.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Varsha Sharma, IPS, on Wednesday said the Goa police is working on different strategies to prevent crimes, including preventive detentions of anti-social elements.
The IPS officer further said that stress is laid on speedy investigations and on how to take people along via awareness.
During her visit to the South Goa district police headquarters in Margao to review pending investigations, the DIG said the South Goa district police Chief, SP Tikam Singh Verma, is doing good work by coming down heavily on narcotics. The DIG reviewed the pending crime investigations in the district and discussed how best to expedite and close the investigations.
“My visit to the South Goa district police headquarters is a routine visit. I have come to review the pending investigations and how best to ensure disposal,” she told the media after the meeting.
On the crime situation, the DIG said extra steps are being taken to crack down on narcotics, while praising the SP, South, for the good work in that direction.
Regarding the increasing crime in the State, she said the police are looking for strategies to keep criminals at bay. “Preventive detention is being resorted to by the men in uniform to keep a check on anti-social elements. We have also laid stress on awareness and on how to take the people along,” she added.
Addressing the low number of lady police officers at the police station, the DIG said the matter will be looked into by the department.
