About 35 people took ill at Mauxi-Sattari on Saturday with suspected food poisoning, after they are reported to have consumed shellfish.

They were later taken to the Valpoi Community Health Centre (CHC) for treatment.

According to reports, about 15 families had purchased shellfish from local fish vendors and they took ill after consuming the shellfish at lunch. They began to suffer from vomiting and diarrhoea.

By evening, about 35 people were rushed to the Valpoi CHC to seek treatment.

When contacted, CHC duty officer Dr Sanket Fadte confirmed that a number of patients had been treated for food poisoning at the CHC.

“At present, one patient has been admitted, while the others were sent home after medical treatment at the CHC,” said Dr Fadte.

Speaking to reporters, a local, Raju Gaonkar, said the 35 people form Mauxi had taken ill after consuming shellfish for lunch.

Meanwhile, Health Minister and local MLA Vishwajeet Rane directed health officials to closely monitor the situation.

“I am in contact with health officials on this issue. From the reports I have received from authorities concerned, there is no need for alarm and an enquiry will be conducted regarding the cause of illness in the village,” said Rane.
