PANAJI: Former Mapusa councillor Tarak M. Arolkar has been arrested by the Crime Branch in connection with an alleged Rs 40 lakh property fraud involving land at Assagao.
According to the complaint filed by Pankaj Bajaj, Arolkar allegedly represented himself as the owner and sole authorised person to transact a property bearing Survey No. 37/4 at Assagao, Bardez.
The complainant alleged that Arolkar assured him that the property had a clear and marketable title and induced him to pay Rs 40 lakh towards execution of a sale deed.
However, despite receiving the consideration, Arolkar allegedly failed to execute and register the sale deed and subsequently avoided the complainant.
The complaint further states that subsequent inquiries revealed that Arolkar was neither the owner nor an MOU holder of the property. The sale deed allegedly shown to the complainant was also found to be forged and fabricated.
The Crime Branch registered an offence under Sections 420, 406, 467, 468 and 471 of the IPC in connection with CBPS Crime No. 85/2026 on August 17, and subsequently placed Arolkar under arrest.
