The Goa government has appointed former Chief Engineer of the PWD to carry out a study and mapping of water supply systems in the State in a bid to improve the supply situation.
"We have taken a decision to appoint K R Shrikant, an former engineer, as he has an experience in water supply. He has been engaged to go through all schemes and tell us what is the problem that is causing water woes," Parrikar told media persons after a cabinet meeting.
He said that though the State was pumping around 500 megalitres per day of water, which is one and a half times the requirement of the State and there are many areas which are already getting 24 hours water, there are still some pockets where the tail end consumer suffers. "It is inefficiency and bottlenecks of the distribution network which actually is causing problems and not the quantity of water available," Parrikar said.
Shrikant will have to study ways and means to improve the working of water treatment plants, raw water availability, quality power supply to treatment plants and other issues.
Parrikar said that Shrikant has already begun his work and has already submitted a report on the Assonora plant and what can be done to improve it.
The PWD runs seven regional water supply schemes and rural water supply schemes to supply the state with potable water.
