The Crime Branch arrested four persons for allegedly operating an illegal online cricket betting racket from a villa in Mapusa.
A statement issued by the Goa Police stated that the CB sleuths raided the premises last weekend, following a tip-off that illegal online betting was being conducted on the live Tri-Nation A Series cricket match between India-A and Sri Lanka-A being played in Sri Lanka.
The raid led to arrests of Umashankar Joshi (42) of Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh; Rahul Khot (25) of Sirsa, Haryana; Anvesh Soni (30) of Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh; and Faijan Shaikh (22) of Itava in Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh.
The CB sleuths also seized two laptops, eight mobile phones, a router and other electronic equipment collectively valued at around Rs 2 lakh.
Superintendent of Police, CB, Jivba Dalvi said that an offence has been registered under Sections 3 and 4 of the Goa, Daman and Diu Public Gambling Act, 1976, and Section 66C of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
