Freshly paved roads dug up again for Smart City works

PANAJI

Contractors of Smart City are at it again: impromptu excavation of roads at sporadic locations in the capital city along roads on which claims were made that all work was completed and a fresh black-top carpet laid.

On Monday and Tuesday, the arterial MG Road was being excavated at multiple points, including the UCO Bank-Govinda Building junction, Vishal Mega Mart junction, and other locations.

Enquiries with personnel at these sites did not shed much light on the reasons behind the re-digging of the roads.

According to IPSCDL, all underground work related to the sewerage project and the laying of pipelines for utility and other services had been completed on MG Road in February itself.

Meanwhile, with the 31 March deadline pledged by IPSCDL before the Bombay High Court at Goa fast approaching and just 12 days away, contractors are with their backs to the wall to finish all the projects, especially the tail-end stretch where the entire city’s sewerage network converges.

This final lap of the new sewerage system involves connecting the system to the treatment plant at Tonca with a 750 mm diameter pipe, which is being laid at depths of up to 12 metres.
