VASCO
The incident was witnessed by GBOA president Raymond de Sa, while he was returning home after the panchayat nomination scrutiny.
“Peolin Barretto was proceeding on his scooter towards Vasco, when a truck came on the main road from an internal lane near Pai Nursing Hospital at Vaddem and struck the scooter,” said de Sa.
“Initially, I did not recognize Peolin and I saw a man fallen unconscious with his helmet intact. On removing the helmet, I recognized him and immediately rushed him to the Chicalim Cottage Hospital (CCH) in my car,” he said.
“The truck had dragged the scooter to a distance of almost 2 metres and the driver later fled from the scene. Once at the CCH, I notified the police and relatives of Barretto.”
D’Sa added that relatives rushed to the CCH and later moved Barretto to a private hospital, where he is undergoing treatment and is reported to be out of danger.
Vasco police said they have registered a rash and negligent driving case against the driver and added that the truck had been seized.
Asked if the driver had been absconding, the police clarified that the driver had abandoned the truck at the accident site and had rushed to the police station for fear of getting assaulted.
“We conducted an alcohol test to ascertain if he was under the influence of alcohol and the test turned negative,” said Vasco PI Nolasco Raposo.
“We have arrested the driver on charges of rash and negligent driving and are investigating the case,” PI Roposo added.
