A day after an eight-year-old boy drowned at a rivulet adjoining Cananguinim beach on Sunday, his 17-year-old sister, who had attempted to rescue him, also died while undergoing treatment at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.
Cuncolim Police Station in-charge PI Diego Gracias informed that the elder sibling, Sanika, died early Monday morning while undergoing treatment. A post-mortem conducted at the GMC certified that the cause of death was “pulmonary oedema as a result of submersion in water.”
The body of the deceased was handed over to family members for final rites.
On Sunday, the Naik family from Vastawaddo-Curchorem was hit by tragedy when they had gone for a picnic at Cananguinim beach. While the eight-year-old boy Shlok met a watery grave at the rivulet, his sister Sanika, who had gone to his rescue, also inhaled water and had to be rushed to the GMC in a critical condition.
Police said the bodies of both the brother and sister have been handed over to the family for final rites.
