GMC performs robotic surgery, first by govt-run hospital in India

PANAJI
In a remarkable development, the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) performed its first ever robotic surgery on a 67-year old patient from Margao with knee arthritis.

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said that GMC is the first government run hospital in the country to have conducted robotic-assisted surgery.

“I am delighted to announce that the Department of Orthopaedics at GMC achieved a ground breaking feat by successfully conducting its first robotic surgery, revolutionising orthopaedic and spinal procedures,” Rane said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

He said that the surgery on a 67-year old patient from Margao with knee arthritis was skillfully carried out with an advanced robotic arm, renowned globally for its precision.

“The surgery was concluded within 45 minutes, displaying its remarkable efficiency,” he said.

The Minister said that the procedure’s minimal incision, insignificant blood loss, and absence of post-operative drainage highlighted the robotic arm’s accuracy.

Rane said that the patient witnessed a pain-free walk the next day, thus underscoring the achievement’s significance.

“This achievement marks a monumental stride toward elevating surgical excellence at GMC, epitomising state-of-the-art medical care for the community,” he said.
