Goa slips by two points on EoDB from 19 to 21 in 2016

This comes after Goa saw its EoDB rank slipping by two points from 19 to 21 in 2016.
This ranking is extremely important because states across India show the ranking to attract investments from Indian and foreign companies.
Ninad Karpe, chairman, western region, CII along with other industry representatives of the association paid a courtesy visit to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to discuss ways to improve engagement between the state government and the industry, which will improve Goa’s EoDB ranking.
Talking to media-persons after the meeting, Karpe said, “We believe every state can improve its ranking on EoDB. Goa’s slippage on this parameter wasn’t much. The reasons for the slippage in rank can be identified and there is no reason that improvement can’t be done on this parameter.”
One of the crucial parameters while ranking states on EODB is availability on land. Goa being a small coastal state naturally doesn’t perform well on this count. But, CII representatives said that there are still ways to improve Goa’s performance on this parameter by targeting right industries.
Piruz Khambatta, deputy chairman, CII Western Region, said, “Goa can promote food processing business. But, for that, it needs to be studied as to what Goa can produce and what it can’t produce. I think there is scope in the state to promote value-added crops like spice.”
Khambatta continued, “Goa can also attract companies from bio-technology, services and defence sectors.”
Khambatta also said that traditionally Goa’s dependence on mining has been very high and to de-risk state’s economic model it is important to promote other industries.
To further improve ease of doing business in Goa, Karpe said, “We will have clinics all across the state, where senior members from CII and also government officials will meet business people to explain to them what all government has done to make doing business easier in the state.”
CII will also do programmes across the state for mentoring start-ups, as Karpe added that CII has experienced people, who can mentor young companies.
