It may be recalled that on September 1, 2016, Goa Dairy had revised rates of toned milk and cow milk by Rs 4, while standard milk and full cream milk were hiked by Rs 3 per litre. Presently, full cream milk (high fat buffalo milk with 6.0 FAT and 9.0% SNF) costs the customer Rs 51, while pasteurised STD milk (4.5% FAT and 8.5% SNF) costs Rs 43, cow milk (3.5% FAT and 8.5% SNF) costs Rs 40 and toned milk (3.0% FAT and 8.5 % SNF) will costs Rs 37.
Addressing a news conference on Thursday, Sahkari said the Goa Dairy is facing a loss of Rs 1 lakh per day, which comes to a loss of Rs 1 per litre. “Hence, we are forced to hike the milk rates, but we will take care that it will be at least Rs 2 lesser than other brands,” he said.
Presently, Goa Dairy procures about 25,000 litres of milk from neighbouring states and the domestic collection is about 67,000 litres per day.
“The milk unions outside the State have hiked their rates, hence we have to procure it at a higher rate. Even the requirements to make fodder have hiked,” he said.
Before September 1, 2016, Goa Dairy had hiked the market rate of milk in June 2014 and hiked the procurement rate of local milk from farmers in June 2015.
When Goa Dairy faced market competition from the new entrant SUMUL, it started losing farmers and was forced to give incentives to them by offering a competitive rate for milk supply.
