53-yr-old Agonda woman dies in road mishap

Victim opened umbrella while on scooter and lost balance

A 53-year-old woman from Agonda died in a freak mishap when she fell off a scooter while attempting to open an umbrella to avoid the sudden rains.

According to Canacona police, the incident took place on Friday afternoon when Guelhermina Fernandes and her husband were proceeding on a scooter from Canacona to Agonda. As they reached Bokdamol-Agonda, they encountered sudden heavy rains and strong winds. Guelhermina, who was on the pillion, was reportedly wearing a raincoat but opened the umbrella to protect her husband from the rain. She lost her balance as she opened her umbrella in the strong wind and fell off the moving scooter.

Guelhermina suffered severe head injuries and began to bleed profusely. She was shifted to the Canacona Community Health Centre in a 108 ambulance and was later moved to the South Goa District Hospital at Margao. She was then referred to the GMC Hospital at Bambolim.

Guelhermina failed to regain consciousness and succumbed to her injuries during treatment in the early hours of Saturday. The body was later sent to the mortuary for further inquest panchnama and medico-legal formalities. Canacona police have registered a case and Canacona PSI Ramdas Doifode is conducting further investigations.
