Goa Glorious: Remembering freedom fighter Atmaram Arondekar

Atmaram Bhiva Arondekar, hailing from Mayem, Bicholim, was a prominent freedom fighter whose legacy is preserved at the ‘Aguad Interactive Museum: Goa – The Land, The Struggle, The People’ at Sinquerim. He was a valiant freedom fighter who actively participated in the Mayem farmers’ agitation. A key figure in supporting the Azad Gomantak Dal (AGD), he sheltered its leaders and aided their covert activities. Arondekar also took part in the attacks on Aldona police station on 27th May 1955 and the Regedor of Chodan on 18th June 1955. In December 1956, his house was raided following the Pomburpa police station attack. Arrested with his wife and son, he was imprisoned and beaten in the Panaji jail before being released after five months. He passed away on 27th May 1985.
