The day-long strike called by the Goa Municipal Employees Association across the state on June 29 has been deferred by two months after Urban Development Minister Francis D’Souza sought time till August-end to sort out the issues raised by the Municipal employees.
The Urban development Minster invited a delegation of the Association headed by President Keshav Prabhu, general secretary Anil Shirodkar for discussions on Thursday as a last minute initiative by the government to persuade the Municipal employees to defer the day-long strike on Friday.
Association general secretary Anil Shirodkar told The Goan that the Urban Development Minister was sympathetic to the demands of regularization of the daily wage employees and has sought time till August 31 to resolve the long pending issue. “The Minister was very sympathetic to the demand of regularization of the daily wage workers after we drew his attention to the fact that there are many such employees who have either died or have retired without any benefit”, Shirodkar said.
He further pointed out that the Urban Development Minister in the presence of DMA, Maneka has also promised to look into other long pending demands.
Shirodkar said he has received a message from the office of the Urban Development Ministry later in the evening that the DMA has dispatched the DPC report to the MMC for implementation.
“In view of the promise made by the Urban Development Minster to resolve our problems and given that he has sought time till August 31, the Association has finally decided to defer the strike scheduled on Friday”, Shirodkar said.
