The issue of tenant verification may come back to haunt the men-in-uniform after the Goa Police nabbed a murder accused from Karnataka at Raia, after he was on the run for the last 35 years, wanted in a murder case at Rajkot-Gujarat.
The Goa police termed the arrest of the accused wanted in a murder at Rajkot-Gujarat as a significant breakthrough showcasing the vigilance and efficiency of the men-in-uniform, after he was successfully apprehended in Raia, Salcete.
Police sources informed that the murder accused Basappa, a native of Arakera K, Khalsa Laxmipur in Karnataka state, has been avoiding his arrest by moving across states such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Goa. The accused, sources said has been staying in Goa for the last almost seven years, in the jurisdiction of different police stations.
Sources said the accused has been working in Raia as a daily wage worker to eke a living.
Acting swiftly on crucial information received from Lodhika Police Station, Rajkot, Gujarat, the team from Maina-Curtorim Police Station led by PI Arun Gauns Dessai apprehended the accused from Raia. He was wanted in connection with Crime No. 53/1990 under Section 302 IPC for a murder case registered in 1990.
With the assistance of local intelligence, the team led by ASI Uday Velip, along with HC-5750 Somnath Naik, PC-6614 Amardeep Choudhary, and PC-7403 Dhiraj Naik, successfully traced and arrested the accused on 24/02/2025 at Raia, Salcete. The operation was conducted under the close supervision of SDPO Margao Shivram Vaingankar and SP South Goa Tikam Singh Verma.
The accused, who had evaded the law for over three decades, was arrested under Section 35 of the BNSS 2023. Following the arrest, the Rajkot police were promptly informed, and the accused was handed over to them for further investigation and legal proceedings.
This achievement highlights the Goa Police’s unwavering commitment to justice and collaboration with law enforcement agencies across State lines, ensuring that no criminal can escape the long arm of the law, a Goa Police press note stated.
