By this time last year, Goa was on track to record its third wettest monsoon in six decades, with nearly 40 per cent more rainfall than normal. This year, however, the monsoon has been weak, with the State recording an 11.4 per cent rainfall deficit.
Latest data from IMD Goa shows the State has so far received 2,067.7 mm of rainfall, compared to the normal 2,334.0 mm for this period. Last year, by the same time, Goa had received nearly 3,800 mm of rain, breaking its average seasonal pattern.
The IMD has described several days of this season as “weak”, despite a few red and orange alerts and good showers in some interior areas. Overall, Goa is experiencing mostly cloudy skies with less rain, though parts of South Goa and the hinterland have reported heavy showers.
A yellow alert has been issued for the State till August 15, with a forecast of heavy rain at isolated places and winds of 30-40 kmph, gusting up to 50 kmph, in some areas.
“An upper air cyclonic circulation over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Telangana, between 3.1 km and 5.8 km above mean sea level and tilting southwards with height, persists. A low-pressure area is likely to form over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal around August 13, 2025, and is expected to intensify over the following two days,” the IMD stated.
