Congress is sincere to fight corruption and will bring one of the best Lokayukta Acts in the country when it comes to power, said Congress President Girish Chodankar on Saturday, while suggesting that all pending cases which were ordered by former Goa Lokayukta will also be looked into.
Chodandkar also said Congress brought several laws to fight corruption but the BJP government diluted them to escape trial.
“When our government comes to power in Feb 2022, we will bring a Lokayukta Act to put an end to corruption. It will be a model act and other States will look up to the Goa Lokayukta Act,” Chodankar said, while speaking at a function to felicitate freedom fighters in Mapusa.
Former union minister Ramakant Khalap, North Goa district President Vijay Bhike and other Congress leaders were also present.
According to the GPCC President, Congress Legislature Party leader Digambar Kamat had tabled a Lokayukta Bill in the recently concluded Assembly session but the BJP government did not allow the said bill even to get listed.
He said senior Congress leader and former union law minister Ramakant Khalap had drafted the said bill when he was the chairman of Goa Law Commission. “We will upload the bill on our website and seek more suggestions from the legal experts, NGOs and others to strengthen the bill further,” he said.
“We will also inform all our candidates of the coming assembly elections about our firm commitment to put an end to the corruption in Goa. We will ensure that all our candidates after getting elected remain non-corrupt and perform their duties with honesty,” he added.
He further informed that Congress government will also investigate all the pending cases which were ordered by the former Goa Lokayukta.
Former union minister Ramakant Khalap lauded the efforts of all freedom fighters and the Indian National Congress to free the country of the colonial yoke. He decried attempts made to divide the country on religious, caste and creed basis.
“If India is going to lead the world then we have to come together and remain united,” Khalap said.
GPCC Vice Presidents Dharma Chodankar and Gurudas Natekar, spokesman Mahadev Khandekar, ex-MLA Pratap Gawas, ex-minister Chandrakant Chodankar, NSUI President Naushad Chaudhary, district office bearers, block presidents and others were present for the function.
