Goan Football lovers react as Luka Modrić waves goodbye to Real Madrid

PANAJI: Real Madrid's most decorated player and veteran midfielder Luka Modrić is set to bid farewell after the upcoming Club World Cup which is scheduled for June. Modrić and the 15-time Champions League winners mutually agreed on his departure, with the club releasing an official statement.

“The time I never wanted to come, but that’s football, and in life, everything has a beginning and an end. On Saturday, I’ll play my last game at the Santiago Bernabéu. I carry the affection of all Real Madrid fans in my heart. I truly don’t know how to explain the special connection I have with you and how supported, respected, and loved I have felt—and still feel,” wrote Modrić in an emotional social media post.

As the curtain falls on his legendary Los Blancos chapter, fans across Goa are reflecting on the former Croatian captain’s  contribution to the Beautiful Game, particularly his influence has left a mark in inspiring Goan footballers.

“One thing that has stood out more than anything else is Modrić’s longevity. To be playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world at the highest level at the age of 39 is incredible,” stated prominent FC Goa player Sahil Tavora, adding that Modrić will definitely go down as one of the all-time great midfielders.

Aahan Phillips, a Madridista since 2002 and a former state footballer, remarked that Luka Modrić’s departure from Real Madrid marks the end of an era. “Watching the midfielder pull the strings was like watching poetry in motion. It’s almost poetic that a player once labelled as La Liga’s ‘worst signing’ in 2012 would rise to become a Ballon d’Or winner, a multiple Champions League champion, and an enduring symbol of Real Madrid’s spirit. While many recall Sergio Ramos’ iconic 92:48 equaliser in the 2014 Champions League final, it was Modrić’s precise corner-kick that set the stage for that decisive moment.”

Another Los Blancos supporter, Steven Mascarenhas, highlighted the resilience that defines Modrić’s journey. He pointed out how the six-time Champions League winner and his family had to fend for themselves as refugees following the murder of his grandfather and the burning of their home.
