Goa’s ranking in international exports market drops

PANAJI

The State’s performance across some vital sectors continues to disappoint.

In one of the important areas wherein Goa has done incredibly well in the export of ‘drug (medicine) formulations and Biologicals,’ its overall ranking in the “international exports market” has been witnessing an embarrassing drop for consecutive five years.

A report by The Federation of Indian Export Organisations revealed that exports from Goa to the top 10 destinations have dropped in view of which the State’s ranking also slipped to 19th rank in 2021-22 from 16th position in 2017-18.

The top 10 export destinations comprised a share of 68.01 percent of Goa’s total exports in 2021-22, and out of 169 principal commodities, Goa dealt in 112 commodities.

The top 10 commodities constituted a share of 82.72 percent in the State’s total exports in 2021-22 wherein Drug Formulations, Biologicals constituted the maximum 46.72 percent.

Once the largest exporter of Iron Ore, Goa’s contribution to other countries last financial year was 5.33 percent, whereas the share of Iron and Steel was 8.65 percent and marine products was 4.03 percent.

Export of agrochemicals was recorded at 3.27 percent while telecom instruments were 5.33 percent.

While Goa’s performance has weakened during the past five years, its adjoining states Karnataka and Maharashtra were still better.

Maharashtra ranked 1st or 2nd during this period whereas Karnataka’s ranking varied between 4th and 6th. The southern state ranked 4th last fiscal year. Gujarat, yet another BJP-ruled State, has topped the international exports chart.

Goa stood at 16th position in 2017-18 and remained unchanged at 18th position from 2018-19 to 2020-21 that comprised the pandemic period, and finally slipping to 19th rank in 2021-22. The pandemic year did hit the other States but became an opportunity for Gujarat that took over Maharashtra’s Number 1 rank.

The Federation of Indian Export Organisations -- a Non Profit entity, is ISO certified apex body of Indian export promotion organizations set up jointly by the Ministry of Commerce and private trade and industry in 1965. It is also a partner of the Central government to promote India’s exports.
