PANAJI
The Goa government has proposed installing five CCTV cameras in every village panchayat across the State and is drafting a policy to regulate the retention of surveillance footage.
During a hearing before the High Court of Bombay at Goa on Thursday, Advocate General Devidas Pangam submitted that a draft policy on CCTV footage retention had been prepared and that the government had initiated an assessment of the scheme’s technical feasibility and cost.
The assessment is expected to be completed within about three weeks.
The submissions were made during the hearing of two connected petitions filed by Sharlet Fernandes, one of which concerns the Village Panchayat of Majorda-Utorda-Calata.
Pangam informed the court that a file had been moved to assess the financial implications and technical feasibility of installing five CCTV cameras in each village panchayat under a dedicated government scheme.
Taking note of the government’s submissions, the Bench observed that the issues raised in the petitions would be largely addressed once the footage retention policy and camera installation scheme were implemented.
The High Court adjourned the matter to November 25.
