With over 400 engineering degree programme seats going vacant, the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) has relaxed the mandatory JEE criteria for admissions to the Bachelors programme. This is the second year in a row that the government has relaxed JEE criteria.

After the first round of admissions that ended on July 5, around 400 seats were left vacant, across four engineering colleges. While almost all seats in the State-run Goa Engineering College at Farmagudi were filled, the vacant seats are spread across private colleges – Padre Conceicao College of Engineering, Verna; Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda; Rayeshwar Institute of Engineering and Information Technology (RIEIT), Shiroda; and Agnel Institute of Technology and Design, Assagao.

“Government has approved the admissions of aspirants to BE Degree Engineering courses, who have not answered JEE-MAIN 2025 exam,” the DTE said in a circular issued adding that the benefit will be extended to students who have cleared Class XII and also Diploma holders.

“Such applicants, (Std XIIth and Diploma) would be offered vacant seats, remaining at the end of Second Round of Engineering Degree admissions, to be conducted in mid-August, schedule of which shall be notified on the DTE,” it added.

In case of Class XII applicants, he or she should secure minimum 45 per cent (40% in case of SC, ST and OBC) marks in Physics, Maths and one other specified subject, whereas, the interested eligible Diploma holders in any branch of Engineering will have to have 45 per cent (40% in case of SC, ST and OBC) aggregate marks.

The applicants have to submit forms by August 6.

“Merit lists of such applicants shall be based on aggregate marks scored in the subjects of Physics and Mathematics at Std XIIth exam and qualifying diploma exam,” it said.

For the first time in 2024 after around two decades, the government altered the criteria for the admissions to the engineering seats, replacing JEE with the Goa Common Entrance Test (GCET). However, with no takers for around 500 seats, last year, the DTE allowed students, who had not answered JEE, to fill the vacant post. However, even after that only 50 seats were filled.
