A Fast Track Special Court (POCSO) has sentenced a waiter from Mizoram to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping and attempting to kill the woman owner of a resort in Arpora, where he was employed in 2019.
The accused, Lalrinnunga, then aged 22 years and resident of Aizawl, Mizoram, was convicted following a trial in the case registered at Anjuna Police Station.
Details reveal that the incident occurred on December 18, 2019, when the accused allegedly wrongfully confined the woman, threatened her with dire consequences, raped her, and attempted to smother her with a pillow.
The victim lodged a complaint later that morning, following which Anjuna Police registered an FIR and arrested the accused - employed just two months before the incident.
The case was chargesheeted and tried in the Fast Track Court, which found the accused guilty and sentenced him 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
The court, based on submissions from his lawyer, noted that the accused had already undergone five years, seven months and 11 days in custody since his arrest. Considering his age and his good conduct during the judicial custody, the court set off this period from the sentence. He has also been imposed a penalty of Rs 1.26 lakh.
