With Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar giving a green signal for building of a new bridge across Mapusa River, PWD has drawn up plans to fast track work on the four-lane bridge which is expected to start anytime.
The State government plans to entrust the work of the bridge either to one of the companies engaged in widening of the national highway or the firm that is building the flyover/underpass at Bastora.
As per the project report, the four-lane bridge of 30 metre span is expected to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 8.46 crore which includes channelization, protective measures, illumination and construction of traffic islands on both sides of the bridge.
"As per plans, the existing Tar bridge across the Mapusa River will be demolished and a new four-lane bridge will come up in its place. The bridge will be built within 12 months and work can begin anytime," a senior official in the know told The Goan.
When work on the bridge begins, two-wheelers (light vehicles) will be diverted through the Gaunsa-vaddo road, while heavy vehicles will have to take a detour round the Green Park Hotel.
At least one kiosk on the church side of the bridge and the frontage of two bar and restaurants on either side of the bridge will face the axe to make way for the bridge.
"The kiosk owner, who stands to lose his livelihood, may be rehabilitated," sources said.
Aldona MLA, Glen Ticlo informed that due to increase in flow of traffic, a new bridge across Mapusa River was the need of the hour.
"Due to increase in traffic, there is tremendous demand for the bridge from the locals. I raised the issue in the assembly and the chief minister has taken up the issue," Ticlo said.
Due to its narrow width, the present single lane Tar Bridge witnessed constant traffic jams.
The new bridge will reduce the pressure of traffic inflow which is expected to rise once the underpass is thrown open to public.

"We had laid the foundation stone for the underpass in March 2016 and had said that it would be completed by May 2017. There is delay of 10 months. The assistant engineer has given a word that it will be completed by March 2018," Ticlo said.
