The Goa government has announced preparing a comprehensive database of traditional occupations and artisans in the State in a bid to identify those engaged in traditional livelihoods, frame targeted policies and strengthen their economic security.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant spoke about the initiative during a direct live interaction with artisans, weavers, entrepreneurs and stakeholders from the handicrafts, textile and coir sectors.
“Every handcrafted product represents Goa’s history, culture and identity, and our artisans are the custodians of this rich heritage. Our government will continue to provide skill development, financial assistance, market access and institutional support to help artisans become self-reliant,” he said.
Sawant said the database would provide greater recognition to traditional occupations and help build sustainable livelihood opportunities for artisans.
He also highlighted government schemes and reforms to support traditional crafts and expanding market opportunities for artisans.
“The government provided Rs 1.05 crore to 406 traditional clay idol makers during 2025-26, while around 150 Electric Pugmill Clay Mixing Machines worth Rs 60 lakh were distributed to improve productivity. Under the Vishwakarma Kaushal Yojana and Swavalamban Yojana, 1,003 local artisans benefited through training, financial assistance, tools, raw materials and market support,” he added.
Sawant said more than 100 registered vendors were benefiting from government procurement across 16 categories under the Preferential Purchase Scheme. He also highlighted the rise in GHRSSIDC’s turnover to Rs 56.70 crore in 2025-26 from Rs 37.08 crore.
Aparant Maand provides free exhibition space to more than 100 artisans, while GHRSSIDC retail outlets and digital platforms are being used to expand their market reach.
He also highlighted the Kunbi Craft Village at Ugem-Salaulim, spread over 16,500 square metres, which is expected to directly benefit more than 2,000 Kunbi artisans and promote the Kunbi Saree in national and international markets.
