MARGAO
Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas on Saturday made a plea to the government to appoint a consultant to find ways and means to the treatment of the raw sewage disposal discharged into the river Sal.
The Benaulim MLA along with the Managing Director of SIDCGL Amar Vazhirani on Saturday and the Corporation General Manager Prakash Pai descended on the banks of river Sal at Benaulim, only to find black colour raw sewage water flowing into the river from a stormwater nullah.
The SIDCGL Managing Director, however, maintained that the question of appointing a consultant rests with the government since it involves payments.
Venzy, however, pointed out that there’s no harm in calling any consultant to assist the government before the agencies participate in the codal formalities to take up the consultancy work.
The Benaulim MLA has suggested the treatment of water in the river Sal contaminated by the discharge of raw sewage. “Just because the line is not completed and the network is not fully put to use, we cannot allow the raw sewage to flow into the river and contaminate the water. We have to find ways wherein the raw sewage discharged in the river is treated by creating bandhs so that the sewage does not flow till the end point of the river,” he said.
The Benaulim MLA told the media that he has also spoken to the Margao MLA Digambar Kamat to expedite the process of connecting the households and commercial establishments to the underground sewerage network at the earliest.
