The State government is yet to take a call on whether the new academic calendar- shifting from the current June to April schedule to April to March “ would be implemented from the coming academic term 2025-26. The authorities are currently examining and reviewing the proposal before going ahead.
Speaking to The Goan, Secretary Education IAS Prasad Lolayekar said that the government has not taken any decision so far on the changes and whether it will be implemented from the coming academic year.
Highly placed sources informed that the authorities are taking review and also consulting stakeholders. “Before going ahead with such major academic changes, it is important to understand whether it will be accepted by the students, teachers, parents and everyone involved. The authorities are examining each and every aspect,” sources said.
If the move is to be implemented from the coming term, the government intends to implement the calendar change, in the first phase, for secondary and higher secondary schools, with classes for the new academic year to be conducted from April 1 onwards, only till 11.30am, considering the summer weather.
As reported earlier, new adjustment will align the state board schools with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) calendar, where the academic year commences on April 1 and concludes on March 31, with summer holidays scheduled from May 1 to June 4 (or till first week of June).
The one-month summer holidays will continue like before from May to June. Also, there would be no changes in the academic holidays like that of Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali or Christmas.
Many States like Maharashtra have also adopted a similar pattern. The move, in line with National Education Policy- accepted to facilitate timeline completion of the curriculum- will help all State Boards to align with other boards to have a common academic year and examination process.
