A visibly unhappy Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho denounced the employment issue at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) as a racket, adding that he would raise the issue with the Defence Minister and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.

“Vacancies for GSL jobs are published more in newspapers of other states and this shows that they need outsiders for jobs at GSL. It is a big racket of jobs in GSL and they don't employ locals and our people want to agitate. I will take up the GSL employment issue with the union defence minister and other central ministries,” said Godinho on Friday.

“The day will not be far when people will come out in large numbers and stop their work. I am holding the people behind, but I will take up this matter with the chief minister.”

The minister said GSL was not employing locals at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been promoting vocal for local.

“It is very sad when we are in the government and we cannot see locals get jobs in central government organisations. I want to tell the GSL management to not test the patience of Goans and they must not bring it to such a stage where the mass agitation is inevitable,” said Godinho.

"Let there be a healthy mix of employment. There is no issue if there are highly qualified or technical experts from other states but at least regular jobs must be offered to locals.”

“I can show people who don't know a word of English or procedures of works, but suddenly find a job and are trained in GSL.”

“This has happened before also and I have been constantly raising this issue. I am flagging this issue because as a minister, I am very unhappy that GSL is not taking locals and I will take it up very strongly," said Godinho.
