Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes on Tuesday appealed to all citizens to refrain from creating blockades to any gutters and nullahs built by the MMC or WRD.
Fernandes made the appeal after MMC received a complaint from Chandrakant Mapsencar of Baina, who claimed that someone in the area had built a wall in the WRD gutter, thereby blocking the flow of rainwater.
Mapsencar informed that his house at Baina was completely flood last year during monsoons, due to blockage of the gutter next to his house.
“Last year, there was knee-deep water in my house and all my equipment and furniture got damaged. After the Vasco MLA received information, he sanctioned a gutter near my house for the smooth flow of water and I myself spared some of my property to make the gutter.”
“However, some people have built a dead wall in the gutter, thereby blocking the flow of water and I am sure I will face flooding this year as well.”
“I have been complaining to authorities and I only want that the dead wall blocking the gutter built by WRD be removed, so that water can flow smoothly,” said Mapsencar.
When contacted, MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said he would direct his engineer to immediately inspect the site.
“I have received the complaint and I have given necessary directions to my engineers. I want to inform people that gutters are meant for the smooth flow of water and people should not encroach on them or block them, as it can cause serious calamities like flooding to neighbouring houses. I will be taking strict action in this regards,” said Fernandes.
