Bales of hay which were being transported by a truck went up in flames after coming in contact with overhead live electricity wire at Soliem-Khola on Tuesday afternoon.
According to sources, the truck which was loaded with bales of hay was negotiating a sharp turn along the narrow road, when some bales came in contact with an overhead electricity alignment and caught fire.
On realising the hay engulfed in fire, the driver drove the truck to some distance, before moving to one side of the road which meets the MDR-49 state road at the Vagona-Khola junction.
People in the area noticed the flames and rushed to offer help. A water tanker deployed for underground electricity cabling works was requisitioned while calls were made to the Canacona Fire Station.
By the time a fire tender reached the site, the fire was under control by spraying water from the water tanker. Firefighters then extinguished the fire, before it could spread to other areas of the truck.
The aluminium cargo container of the truck was the only affected area of the truck in the fire, sources said.
