An inspection conducted by health officials on Thursday has exposed the unhygienic and unsanitary conditions prevailing in the Mapusa municipal fish, mutton and chicken market.
The inspection, prompted by a local complaint, revealed several deficiencies and a lack of basic services in the market.
The inspection team, led by Dr Dinesh Parab, Health Officer of the Urban Health Centre in Mapusa, found that the market lacked a valid health NOC and failed to meet several health and hygiene parameters.
The surrounding area was found to be unclean, and the overall condition of the market was described as putrid.
“We conducted a detailed inspection based on a complaint received from a local resident. A report on the market’s condition will be prepared soon,” Dr Parab stated.
Health officials, accompanied by staff from the Mapusa Municipal Council, engaged with vendors during the inspection.
It was observed that the market did not possess mandatory licenses from the Goa State Pollution Control Board, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the health department.
The inspection also highlighted the civic body’s failure in maintaining cleanliness, as the entire market building was found to be in an unkempt state.
The complainant, Atmaram Gadekar, who was present during the inspection, expressed his dissatisfaction over the lack of hygiene in the market.
He criticised the municipal authorities and elected councillors for their negligence in maintaining the market’s condition.
“Despite being elected repeatedly, some councillors have failed to improve and maintain the market. The people of Mapusa deserve better facilities,” Gadekar remarked.
The health department is expected to submit a report on the market’s condition, following which appropriate action may be taken against the lapses found during the inspection.
