Heavy rains lash Goa; IMD issues Orange Alert

PANAJI: A flood-like situation unfolded across Goa today as heavy rains lashed the state, disrupting daily life and causing damage in multiple areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Alert for today and tomorrow, warning of very heavy to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

“Conditions are favourable for the formation of a low-pressure area over the region around May 22, which may intensify and lead to severe weather,” the IMD said in a statement. Residents have been advised to stay informed through the Sachet app for real-time, location-specific alerts.

In Panaji, heavy waterlogging near the Heera petrol pump and Miramar Circle brought traffic to a crawl within the first hour of rainfall. Similar scenes were reported in other vulnerable pockets across the capital.

In Mapusa, daily life was thrown off gear as water entered houses and shops in several low-lying areas. The worst-hit spots included the Mapusa market area, Khorlim Ansabhat, and the vicinity of the district hospital, where local businesses struggled to stay open amid the flooding.

In Canacona, seepage due to heavy rains damaged books at the Ravindra Bhavan library, prompting emergency cleanup efforts. Several tree-fall incidents across the state also added to the widespread disruption, blocking roads and delaying commutes.
