Heavy vehicles plying along narrow Honda roads irk local residents

VALPOI
Heavy vehicles plying along the narrow roads at Honda have angered locals in the area and the local panchayat has claimed that government authorities have largely ignored its objections about the movement of heavy vehicles.
Speaking to The Goan, locals said the movement of heavy vehicles has posed a serious threat to other motorists and pedestrians along the narrow roads in Honda. The narrow roads are inadequate to permit the smooth movement of vehicles moving in opposite directions, leaving pedestrians wi
th virtually no space to walk safely by the roadside.
The locals had requested a company dealing in heavy vehicles in the area to allow movement of heavy vehicles only at night, but the company did not pay heed to their requests.
Honda social activist Sham Sankhalkar raised concern over the heavy vehicle plying early in the morning every day when there is congestion on the road.
"Heavy vehicles ply between the Pissurle junction and the Honda-Tisk road, which is about 3 kms., creating traffic congestion along the road. This practice is going on since two years and many accidents have taken place because heavy vehicles move along the area. Now, the locals are aggrieved and are planning a protest against the company," he added.
Social activist, Hanumant Parab, also regretted that the company had ignored demands to stop movement of heavy vehicles during the day.
"It is a serious problem for commuters and pedestrians in the area and the company must listen to the locals, failing which there are chances that locals could protest at any moment," said Parab.
When contacted, Honda Sarpanch Atmaram Gaonkar said the earlier panchayat had objected to heavy vehicles plying along the route, especially in the morning. "But authorities are not taking the issue seriously. We will adopt a special resolution in this regard and send it to the department concerned. We will also request CM Parrikar to resolve the issue," said Gaonkar.
