High drama unfolded at Arambol beach on Saturday during a raid by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB-Goa zone) forcing the NCB Superintendent Jeetendra Ranjan to fire gunshots in the air to prevent an attack on the raiding team.
NCB team led by Superintendent Ranjan, along with some personnel of Pernem Police attempted a narcotics raid at Star Shack, a shack at Arambol beach. However, the raiding party was attacked by a gang of drug peddlers from Himachal. Taken aback, Ranjan had to fire in air to dissuade the attackers.
The incident occurred when the raiding team attempted to nab the drug peddlers operating at the shack. As news spread about the raid, several Himachal natives working in the shacks located around Star Shack arrived at the spot and began attacking the raiding team.
NCB Superintendent Ranjan fired in air in self defence and to prevent the situation from getting out of hand. Following the firing, the assailants began to flee and in the ensuing mayhem, the raiding team successfully nabbed one of the peddlers.
Pernem Police has registered an offence against those who have been identified and several other unknown accused for attacking the NCB team and obstructing them from performing their lawful duty. Three persons have been arrested in connection with this offence while several other unknown accused are still at large.
NCB team did not seek permission: SP
PANAJI: In what could be termed as a procedural lapse, it is learnt that the NCB team failed to secure the mandatory permission from Superintendent of Police (North) Chandan Chowdhary before securing assistance from Pernem police to conduct the raid at Arambol. Discovering this violation of procedure, SP (North) has initiated a departmental enquiry under Deputy Superintendent of Police and Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Pernem) and has demanded to know how the Pernem police personnel set out to assist the NCB team without prior and express permission of the concerned SP.
