PANAJI: Drishti Marine reported a busy and high-alert weekend along Goa’s coastline, with lifesavers preventing an attempted suicide, rescuing 13 people from drowning across multiple beaches, and tracing two missing children in separate incidents.
The most serious incident unfolded at Baina beach, where a 37-year-old woman from Vasco walked into the sea after stating she intended to end her life. She was pulled into a rip current and began to drown before lifesavers intervened and brought her ashore. She was stabilised, given oxygen, and handed over to the 108 ambulance service for medical care. Police are probing the case.
Across other beaches, a series of water-related emergencies kept rescue teams on alert. At Majorda, a 48-year-old tourist from Rajasthan was dragged into deep water but was quickly brought back to shore.
At Ashwem, two men from Haryana were swept 40“60 metres offshore by a rip current in one incident, while in another, a 47-year-old visitor from Karnataka was pulled 30 metres out to sea. All were rescued safely.
At Mandrem, a 25-year-old man from Hubballi, described as a weak swimmer, was caught in a river rip current nearly 75 metres offshore and was brought back to safety after a coordinated response.
Several rescues were also reported at Morjim, where a 23-year-old man from Lucknow was saved from a river rip current. A 66-year-old Goan man was later swept 50 metres into the sea but was safely brought back. In a separate instance, a man and a woman from Bengaluru were rescued after being caught in a rip current.
At Baga, three tourists were pushed farther into the water by a strong wave but were swiftly located and escorted back to the shore during a group rescue operation.
Separately, two missing children were traced and reunited with their families. At Calangute, a seven-year-old girl from Maharashtra was found in another section of the beach after a brief search. At Candolim, a three-year-old boy from Pune, reported missing, was located near the parking area and returned to his family following standard verification.
