Highway liquor hiccup for Goa

Hard pressed due to election duty, government departments are finding it difficult to implement the Supreme Court order on banning sale of alcohol along national and state highways across the country from April 1 this year.

The apex court had also put a ban on the sale of alcohol within 500 metres from the outer edge of national and state highways.
Implementing this order involves a complex exercise, which requires officials of several departments such as excise, public works department (PWD) and settlement & land records to co-ordinate and physically check as to how many liquor shops and bars are located within the stipulated area.
However, a number of employees from these departments are on election duty till February 4, thus making it very difficult to get the SC order implemented anytime soon.
