PANAJI:
Vishwanath Shankar Arolkar, born on 6th June 1933, in Assolna, Salcete was a valiant freedom fighter whose legacy is preserved at the ‘Aguad Interactive Museum: Goa - The Land, The Struggle, The People’ in Sinquerim. He was an active member of the Azad Gomantak Dal since 1953 and underwent training at the Kundal camp. He participated in multiple key operations, such as the capture of Khandvel (1954) during Nagar Haveli Liberation movement, the attack on Pirla mines (1956), the raid on Salguini police post, the blowing up of the Pissonem culvert (1956), Daman action (1957) and the second attack on the Betim police station (1961). After the Liberation, he served as a member of the Assolna Village Panchayat and thereafter as a deputy sarpanch.
