MAPUSA

THE GOAN: In light of BJP's early candidate announcement and campaign kick-off, as well as their current dominance and access to resources as the ruling party, how do you assess your prospects as a Congress candidate in this electoral contest?

RAMAKANT KHALAP: My reservoir of support is akin to an unstoppable tsunami, bolstered by overwhelming public support. Their (BJP’s) money, slogans, and influence pale in comparison to this groundswell of endorsement. Admittedly, there was a delay in announcing my candidacy, a consequence of the democratic process wherein our party needed to consult with alliance partners.

Critics juxtapose the lacklustre performance of the current MP against my accomplishments (as MP and union minister) in just 18 months. Merely funnelling funds through MPLAD for superficial projects pales in significance compared to addressing the real needs, like job creation and robust infrastructure.

TG: Over the past two decades, particularly in the last decade, your political involvement has been relatively subdued. Given this, do you consider yourself fortunate to have been nominated as the Congress Party's candidate for the North Goa seat?

RK: I do feel fortunate…but I was not away from the public during all these years. Just take a look at these books – 22 comprehensive reports from the Law Commission, all dedicated to Goa and the welfare of its people. They cover crucial issues like the land rights of Goans, the protection of our precious lands, rivers, and water bodies. What more could one expect from a dedicated politician? My commitment to serving the people of Goa extends beyond just politics.

TG: Despite your prominent stature within the Congress Party, there's been a noticeable absence of direct confrontations or criticisms towards BJP leaders or their policies over the past decade. Was this a deliberate choice to adopt a more reserved approach?

RK: That is my character. I've diligently cultivated relationships across the political spectrum. During my visits to Delhi, I made a point to engage with leaders from various political ideologies, and I earned their respect in return. I don’t believe in being street smart. Confrontations typically arise only during election times. Otherwise, what's wrong with fostering a constructive dialogue and achieving results with a positive attitude?

TG: Given your extensive experience as a Union Minister and your tenure in State politics, including reaching the position of Deputy Chief Minister, have you ever felt overlooked or underutilised by the Congress party?

RK: This question is something people like yourself might be better equipped to answer. When the government is supportive, there's virtually no limit to what can be achieved. However, it's essential to acknowledge that there are constraints, including personal conflicts and other hurdles that arise. Yet, in the grand scheme of things, if progress is being made overall, why dwell on minor issues that may have fallen through the cracks, whether intentionally or unintentionally?

TG: Voters have expressed concerns about the possibility of you winning the North Goa seat but later aligning with the BJP if they secure victory at the national level. How would you address these perceptions?

RK: This malicious attempt to tarnish my image doesn't faze me. Why would I entertain the thought of crossing over to another party? Would I willingly risk losing my seat or tarnishing my legacy in the annals of history? My aspirations reach far beyond that. I aim to shine as the brightest star among politicians, leaving behind a heritage of achievement for my children and grandchildren. Decades from now, when they read about my accomplishments in books or search for them online, I want them to feel proud of their ancestor's legacy.
