Illegally extracted sand worth Rs 13.55 lakh seized at Maina-Curtorim

In a major joint raid conducted by the Department of Mines and Maina-Curtorim police, illegally extracted sand worth around Rs 13.55 lakh has been seized at Maina-Curtorim.

Maina-Curtorim police station in-charge, PI Shivram Vaingankar informed that the joint raid was conducted by officials of Mines and police at Maina-Curtorim on Monday evening.

He said the Maina-Curtorim police has also seized six canoes and two suction pumps from the spots, adding that the canoes and the pumps have since been handed over to the Captain of Ports.

While the police has registered a case of theft read with Section 34 of the IPC and also booked a case under the provisions of the Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation Act, 1957, no arrests have been made so far.

To a question, PI Shivram said that officials of the Department of Mines assessed the value of the extracted sand lying at the spot. To another question, he pointed out that the police and the Department of Mines will rope in machinery to dump the extracted sand back in the river.
