Acting promptly on a report in The Goan, the authorities on Friday sealed off the median which was illegally opened along the national highway near Vales junction at Dabolim.
Panchayat Minister and Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho, who had told The Goan that he was aware of the opening of the median along the highway, took strong note of the report and directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to act swiftly and close the median opening.
Two-wheeler riders, who used to cross over dangerously to the other side of the road through this median for the last few days, were caught unaware of the median closure and were found heading back to the main road and moving towards MES College junction to cross over to the other side.
The residents of the area around Dabolim have expressed happiness at immediate closing of the median by Godinho and NHAI authorities.
"We are very happy that the median was closed immediately. It was a long-pending demand and the authorities had closed it after several fatal accidents had taken place. But somehow some miscreants opened it again. This median is closed again now and it's time that police keep a watch on miscreants trying to open this median and impose strict punishment for altering government property," said a resident.
When contacted, project director of NHAI P S Dodamani said the median was closed early Friday morning following instructions from Panchayat Minister Godinho.
"The median opening was a nuisance and endangering the lives of motorists who were using this shortcut. We have closed this median on Friday morning," said Dodamani.
When contacted, Minister Godinho said he had directed the NHAI to immediately close the illegal median opening on top priority.
"I have also directed the police department to keep a strict watch on any suspicious people around the place late at night," he said.
"I have directed the NHAI to do what it takes to prevent further breaches of this sort including action against those responsible for breaking the median," he added.
