PANAJI: Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) on Wednesday in a joint meeting with the North Goa Collector and concerned police officials decided not to host any feast, fair or ferries in Panaji in consonance with the High Court directions of 2007.
CCP has ordered the owners of around 96 stalls, erected as a part of the annual Ashtami ferry along the Campal Promenade, to take down their structures by 2 pm on Thursday failing which CCP will undertake demolition under police protection. Deposit paid by the stall owners is set to be refunded.
In the letter addressed to the North Goa Collector and concerned police officials, CCP Commissioner Dessai on Wednesday stated that a petition has also been filed by a citizen before the High Court of Bombay at Goa.
Previously on April 19, after hearing the contempt petition filed by Kashinath Shetye, HC had reiterated its directions of 2007 "to ensure that all footpaths in municipal areas are kept open for free movements of the public". Earlier this week, Shetye posted the HC order along with photos of the ferry stalls on Facebook.
While the CCP claimed that no permissions were granted to the stalls which have encroaching on the area reserved for parking of election-duty vehicles, stall owners insisted that permissions were secured after payment of dues 15 days ago.
Shaikh Shafin, one of the affected stall-owners stated, "Municipality gave us permission and now the same municipality is ordering demolition of our stalls. What about our livelihoods? We put in three months of work to set up these stalls."
Another furious stall-owner pointed out that stalls were being erected since Monday. "We are not thieves. They are asking us to pay some money now. We will not pay any fines or dues. We have paid the entire dues on Saturday in the last week," he said.
An owner of a furniture stall said that he has bought goods worth Rs 12 lakh to be sold at the ferry. He disclosed that the CCP has asked the affected stall-owners to take their deposits back. "They told us to come on a working day. But why do we take the money back after investing so much? Why did they give permissions without considering this matter?" he questioned.
Imran Shivole, stall-owner from Margao added that the amount of dues paid varied with each stall, as per the size of the stall. "Some have paid Rs 9,000. Some others have paid Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000. The amount was calculated at Rs 30 per sq mts for each stall each day," he said.
